7 Tips on Naming a Racehorse
- Keep It Short and Memorable: Aim for a name that is easy to remember and pronounce. Shorter names like “Blitz” or “Echo” are often more impactful and easier for announcers and fans to recall.
- Consider Lineage: Incorporate elements of the horse’s sire or dam’s name to honor their heritage. This is a traditional approach that can add significance to the name.
- Get Creative with Themes: If you have multiple racehorses, consider using a theme for their names. Themes like condiments (e.g., “Mustard,” “Pepper,” “Ketchup”) or places (e.g., “Sydney,” “Paris,” “Tokyo”) can be fun and memorable.
- Use Inspiration: Draw inspiration from mythology, literature, nature, or history. Names like “Artemis,” “Glimmering Gold,” or “Phoenix Rising” can evoke powerful imagery and stories.
- Incorporate Special Meanings: Consider names that have a special meaning to you, whether it’s a place you love, a favorite book character, or a significant event.
- Think About Future Announcements: Imagine how the name will sound when announced during a race. Names that flow well and have a rhythmic quality can be more appealing.
- Keep It Timeless: Choose a name that will stand the test of time. Avoid trendy names that might not age well.
Official Rules of Naming a Racehorse
Naming a racehorse is a fun and creative process, but it comes with specific rules and regulations that must be followed. These guidelines are set by various racing authorities to ensure uniqueness and appropriateness. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you name your racehorse correctly:
- Names have a maximum limit of 18 characters, including spaces and punctuation.
- Names should not have initials.
- Names cannot end with terms like “filly,” “colt,” “stud,” “mare,” “stallion,” or any other horse-related terms.
- Names must not contain just numbers unless they are written out and are above thirty, like “Forty Forty.” Numerical suffixes such as “1st” or “2nd” are not allowed.
- Names cannot include the names of living individuals or those who have been deceased for less than 50 years, unless you have written consent from them or their family.
- Any name that implies commercial branding or advertising is not allowed.
- Names must be free from vulgar, obscene, or suggestive language, and should not be in poor taste.
- Names should not offend any religious, ethnic, or political groups.
- There are over 3000 names that are permanently retired to honor historically significant horses and cannot be reused. Such names include Frankel, Secretariat, and Seabiscuit.
- Names currently in use, or those similar to them, cannot be reused until at least 5 years after the horse has retired from racing and breeding.
All names must be approved by the relevant racing authority, such as The Jockey Club in the United States or the British Horseracing Authority in the UK. Authorities usually require you to submit 6 names in order of preference from which they will choose.
There are over 250,000 names registered, so make sure you double check your names are available. You can check available names on the British Horseracing website here.
